This year I was extremely fortunate to receive a grant from the Lesley University New Teacher Group, for our students to try their own hand at making flower arrangements inspired by art works from the MFA. With the grant funds I purchased a huge number of fake flowers, vases, floral wire, foam and tape.
The first step in the process for our students was to look at images from the last few Art in Blooms and discuss what they noticed, liked, what they thought worked well and what they would have done differently if they were the artists.
Students made observations that the people making the flower arrangements made connections to the art works they selected by using colors from the art works and by creating shapes that relate to the art works. The students were particularly interested in how the flower arrangement inspired by the lamp used yellow flowers in the area that the light bulbs were located on the lamp. They thought this was a clever way of relating the art work and the flowers.
After a lot of discussion and some demonstrations the students jumped right in making their own arrangements. They first picked a vase and image and then moved onto picking flowers... Below are some in progress and some finished floral arrangements made by the students. To see all of them please join us at the Spring Showcase.
